Tatsuo Miyajima: Trip The Light Fantastic At The MCA

Tatsuo Miyajima: Connect with Everything

Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney.

Show closes 5 March, 2017.

Tatsuo Miyajima is one of Japan’s most renowned contemporary artists. He is a sculptor and makes illuminated "number works" that incorporate sophisticated LED technology. In this retrospective of his career currently on at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney, his technically driven sculptures of lights are the main attraction. You'll wander by multiple numbers-based LED installations that look like countdown clocks, as well as pile of coal with a train track (!), a pond, balls of light and a very red, red room. You'll notice each of the LED sculptures cycling from 1 to 9, representing the journey through life, although not sequentially and there is also never a zero appearing.

The further you wander in, the more trippy it becomes. Save the blue room for last and let the sheer scale and effect play with your mind (and eyes) for bit.
